Last week's Speaker

Kevin Sheehan was introduced by his uncle, Joe Sheehan. Previously a homicide detective, altar boy, former Marine, and director of security for the New Hampshire Supreme Court system, Kevin now operates Dove Security. He spoke highly of his uncle Joe and said that when he and his brothers and sisters were young, they heard that their uncle was going to the White House and had been invited to the inaugural ball and were not impressed. But when they heard he had hit a home run in Fenway Park at an all-star college game, they thought the world of him. He said that he was a charter president of a Rotary Interact Club and watched it grow from 25 students to 150 students.

Kevin explained that Dove Security provides physical security for courts, schools (boarding schools primarily), and businesses. His firm is currently assessing the security of state court buildings throughout the country for the National Center for State Courts. He warned that even though we live in a safe community, dreadful crimes can happen, and reminded us of a triple homicide in an upscale Massachusetts town where a mother, father and son were brutally murdered in 1975.
Kevin cautioned us that "there are desperate people out there who do desperate things," and his security suggestions follow:
- Lock doors
- Be careful in shopping mall parking lots
- Have an escape route planned in your home in case of fire and make sure the children in the home know what to do
- Have a meeting place outside the home in case of fire
- If you own a gun, know how to use it, and use it at a firing range at least once a year
- If a criminal wants your purse, don't fight him- give it to him
- For men, carry a money clip with $20-$40 in it and if asked for your money, give him the money clip. He may take off with it and leave you with your wallet.
- If a van pulls up next to you with side door open, fight like crazy because if they get you inside, chances are you won't be seen again alive.
- Stay on the third or fourth floor of a hotel. It's not so high that a hook and ladder can get you down in case of fire, but is more secure than the first floor
- Use the safe at the front desk of a hotel
- Fire travels at 19 feet per second, so MOVE!
- if followed in your car, go to police/file station or another safe well-lit area. Do not geto out of your car
Kevin entertained questions from the audience, and was asked what the number one issue in courthouse security was. Kevin answered keeping weapons out of the courthouse. He said that many judges and their families were threatened.
Thought for the Week
Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.
