Last Week
Cathy Chase announced that our guest speaker would be judging the Wells Rotary Club cheer contest, which each table was to compose.
Our guests from the Interact Club introduced themselves, as well as gave a short report on their accomplishments this year.
The “Happy Dollars” session was briefly interrupted by the “Wreaths Across America” entourage as we witnessed 4 eighteen-wheelers full of wreaths, along with their police and other escorts, go by on their way to Arlington cemetery – quite touching!
Rotary Minute
Vince Christinziano spoke about club membership. Members’ motivation and enthusiasm are great examples for attracting new members, as is the lead taken by the club on many local projects. And like a family who is always looking for new members, we, as a club, should always be looking for new members.

Last week's Speaker
Dana Parry, Manager of the Sanford Regional Airport, announced that he has been the new manager for 8 months. He reviewed the airport’s history from 1928, when several Sanford businessmen decided Sanford needed an airport, to the present, some of the highlights being:
- 1943 – Navy leased airport and constructed a 6,000-and 5,000-footlong runway
- 1944 – Changed to a naval training facility for landing on aircraft carriers
- 1945 – Changed to torpedo training facility
- 1965 – North/South runway closed
- 1994 – Town of Sanford, which owns the airport, changed name to Sanford Regional Airport. (3rd busiest in state, 4th longest runway in state, $200,000/year to run airport)
- 2007 – Naval hanger torn down, and the large timbers were used to construct the Hannafords in Augusta in keeping with Hannaford’s “Green” effort.
The airport is now used for General Aviation, which means it does not include commercial or military operations. There are 88 airplanes, 88% of those being owned by people who live outside of Sanford, and 57 privately owned hangers. The airport is open 24/7 with Southern Maine Aviation supporting all the needs of the flying public.
Mr. Parry explained that he saw the airport as a “Gateway to southern Maine” – that many flyers, from Piper Cubs to luxury private jets, fly to Maine for the “Maine Experience.” And these flyers rent cars and head to Ogunquit, Wells, and the Kennebunks, making it good for local tourism and economy. He went on to explain that the Town of Sanford considered the airport an asset, that he would like to expand the public’s awareness of what the airport offers, and that there was to be new development at the airport with 95% being paid for by the federal government, with the State and Sanford picking up 5% of the cost, the goal being to make the airport a good neighbor.
Thought for the Week
Do something every day that you don't want to do; this is the golden rule for acquiring the habit of doing your duty without pain.
