Rotary Minute
Rotary Minute – Dennis Hardy reviewed all the recently completed projects that the club has successfully fulfilled: i.e., $20,000 for high school snack shack, $60,000 for the recreation pavilion, Urgent Center money, scholarships, etc. He presented the idea that since the Wells Corner intersection is going to be updated, the club’s next project should be a presence at the park – a Rotary clock, or perhaps a fountain like the one that was there in 1890. It was reported that the battle to have the wires go underground was lost, but that, in order to improve the appearance, they could be rerouted at a lower cost. It was suggested that we write the DOT to encourage that expenditure.

Announcements
Kathy Chase asked all the members to fill out the Friendly Profile Survey and return them at next week’s meeting.
The club wants to take the opportunity to heartily thank Kathy Thornton for the wonderful job she did for our Christmas families – both the food and presents.

Last week's Speaker
Sheriff Ouellette said he had been in law enforcement for 38 years, and went on to explain what the Sheriff’s office does. Law enforcement authority comes from the Sheriff’s department. Currently there are 29 towns in York County, 15 having local police forces, and 14 without. His 12 deputies are currently stretched thin in taking on the 14 that don’t have police forces (47,000 people that expands to 75,000 in the summer months in a 585 square mile area), because of budget cuts the department lost 7 deputies. They also work closely with the town forces providing access to the new lab in Alfred, access to the computer crimes section, special training for evidence response teams, etc. He emphasized how well these group efforts benefit the region.
Another of the Sheriff’s responsibilities is the running of the new jail, which has also been tested because of budgetary cutbacks. The jail holds 292 inmates, with an average of 205/day. Recently inspected by the Department of Corrections, they were awarded a 100% rank. He is pursuing a national accreditation, which will help obtain more federal grants.
The department is also responsible for processing all civil paperwork proceedings, and with the economy down, the paperwork on foreclosures and related problems, has greatly increased. Serving paper on foreclosures can be difficult, and the people on the receiving end must often be warned not to “shoot the messenger.”
He remarked that law enforcement had come a long way – that you have to hold a certificate to practice law, and that has improved the way police forces serve the public. He emphasized that taking the time to correct a situation is far better than an immediate “show of force.”
Thought for the Week
Silence and smile are two powerful words. Smile is the way to solve many problems and Silence is the way to avoid many problems - Anon
