Rotary Minute

Billy Hobbs spoke about our choosing a new project. We should consider what Rotary stands for: club service, vocational service, community service, and International service, and in so doing consider what the community needs are and avoid duplication by being aware of what other groups are undertaking for their projects.

Announcements

Cathy Chase thanked Rocky Furman for stepping in as a greeter and Dennis Hardy and Billy Hobbs for working together on the 25th Anniversary Charter Night in the spring.

Member Spotlight

Member Spotlight – Cathy Chase spotlighted Bob Foley, of Cole Harrison Insurance, who is a 26-year Rotarian and member of the Wells Board of Selectmen. Bob Bohlmann, a member of the Wells Rotary Club since 1990, is the Emergency Management Director for York County. Both Bobs favorite sport is basketball.

Last Week's Speaker

York County Community Action was organized in 1965 to help York County’s poor. Connie’s role is in the transportation area, one of their key programs that provides buses for people who need rides to schools, medical appointment, their work places, etc. There are 110 volunteer drivers, as well, for people who cannot utilize the bus service.

The Shoreline Explorer is 3 years old and provides year-round service between Sanford and Wells and coastal summer service. It is utilized largely by locals and kids up to 18 ride free. Shoreline connected all the bus/trolley services from Kennebunk to York, with the Chambers of each town being instrumental in making it happen The Wave buses (Wheels to Access Vocation and Education) have transported 300,000 people to date. Funding is provided by the state, federal, county, and town governments and private foundations. She encouraged the club to keep them in mind “fundwise,” because they provide a much-needed service to the community.

Ken Creed, who deals with the day-to-day operation of the vehicles, announced that in mid-February they will receive 3 hybrid (diesel/electric) vehicles in the state that will run 7 days a week/18 hours a day. Part of his job will be to educate the drivers on the operation of the hybrids. Also, a new fleet of Molly trolleys is coming to Wells purchased by the state DOT. They are being built in Maine.
