Rotary Minute
Vince Christinziano spoke of the RI web site. An article in the Rotarian recalled a midwestern flood of 1913. Having just been chartered, two clubs managed to raise $25,000 for flood relief. Vince encouraged the club to read about other relief efforts in the Rotarian web site.
Member Spotlight
Cathy Chase spotlighted Dennis Thayer from the Wells Sanitary District who has been a member for 22+ years. He and his wife, Diane, have two children and currently two grandchildren. Dennis enjoys biking, hiking, golf, and boating in the summer months. Dennis is proud to be a member of the Wells Rotary Club. John Kreie, a Liberty Mutual Insurance agent, and his wife have one daughter. He enjoys golfing, hunting, and skiing. His favorite color is green, and his pet peeve is tailgating. His grandfather was a Rotarian, and he, too, is proud to be in the Wells Rotary Club, where he can give back to his community.
Wrap-A-Smile
Terry Hodskins gave a brief summary of her quilting for the Rotoplast project particularly for our new members. She has received quilts from every state and 3 countries other than the USA. In 2009, 2,169 quilts were donated, and since the beginning of the project, 14,519 quilts have been received. In every single quilt there is a label with our club’s name on it.

Last week's Speaker
Bruce Poliquin, Candidate for Governor of Maine
Bruce said he was honored to be here and admired our cheerful attitude. He is a third generation Waterville native who worked his way through Harvard as a financial aid student, studying economics. He helped build a Maine investment management business, which managed $5 billion in worker pension funds. He has started, invested in, and managed a number of Maine businesses. He said that Maine has gone from a healthy blue-collar economy to something much less. Thirty years of mismanagement have made it too costly and complicated to do business in this state. We have to make Maine more business-friendly so that our children will have opportunities to stay in Maine. Also high taxes have forced our seniors to leave the state. “We need to get back to basics.” Bruce emphasized that he was not a politician, that he’d call “a spade, a spade,” and with his business and economic background, he’d get us back on track. Taking questions, Bruce said:
- Assistance should be temporary and not be limitless. Social programs should help people become independent again.
- Business is not our enemy, but our friend. Need to make the regulatory process much less cumbersome.
- Gambling – not in favor
- Control spenders – Audit all state agencies and have professional manager, not political appointees, in charge. Even the Democrats know that spending is out of control. He would be willing to take the heat and go directly to the voters for support
- How is he financing his campaign? Privately. He’s not taking state funds, and he has three times the dollars of any other current campaign.
Thought for the Week
By the time a man realizes that maybe his father was right, he usually has a son who thinks he's wrong.
- Charles Wadsworth
