Announcements
Red Cross Blood Drive:
Brian Mula-Howard from the Red Cross reported that the blood drive in Wells would be February 22 at St. Mary’s from 12 noon to 6 p.m. Appointments weren’t necessary – that a large staff would be on hand so that waiting would be at a minimum. And Dennis Thayer asked for volunteers to help with the blood drive.
Last week's Speaker
Elaine Tomaszewski, Wells Superintendent of Schools
Elaine, who comes from an upstate New York tourist town, has served in the Saco/Dayton area, 5 years in North Carolina, and has now been back in Wells, another tourist town, for 7 months. She noted that she likes the activity of tourist towns like Wells. She holds many educational degrees including one in Educational Administration. From July to September Elaine concentrated on getting to know the townspeople, town officials, librarians, staff and students. She said she was very pleased with the phenomenal support from the students’ parents.
She noted that the systems in place were good systems and that Wells had a fine Board of Education. She’s planning a 2-day event with members of all the community to plan what the district will be in 5 years, and that those goals will be taken seriously – not put on the shelf.
Her biggest challenge is the budget this year because less state aid is expected. She’s working to keep a low budget but not hurt the children in doing so. One of the upcoming challenges to the town will be that the high school will be in need of updating – it’s showing signs of wear and tear. Elaine shared promising statistics with the club regarding SAT scores rising, number of graduating students rising, and attendance rising. A question-and-answer period followed.
Thought for the Week
Such is the irresistible nature of truth that all it asks, and all it wants, is the liberty of appearing.
