Gary Leech, owner of Congdons Doughnuts, officially became a Wells Rotarian and was “pinned” by Kathy Chase. Gary and his wife, Diane, have seven children and four grandchildren. His favorite book is “Embraced By The Light.” Gary is well known for his charitable involvement in the community. Margaret Chigas and her husband, Bill, live on Tatnic Road in Wells. She has 5 children and stepchildren and 6 grandchildren and step-grandchildren. Margaret likes gardening and tennis. Her favorite color is green, and her favorite book is “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

Rotary Minute

Luke Guerrette explained the Wells Rotary Charitable Fund, a 5013C fund in which contributions are tax deductible. Luke would like to be able to move more of the Club’s activities into the fund – the golf tournament – for example.

50 / 50

Brad Paige gave to the food pantry.

Announcements

Kathy Chase covered updates and announcements, and it was announced that the emergency fuel fund was dry. This fund is for people who are on the edge of receiving government assistance. A motion was made, seconded, and carried unanimously to donate $1,000 to the fund.

Last week's Speaker

Dr. Owen Grumbling

Dr. Owen Grumbling, Chairman of the Wells Conservation Commission, has served on the commission for 28 years. He saluted our club for the good work it has done over the years.

He explained that the members of the commission are appointed by the selectmen, and that they try to look to the future to determine what is worth keeping:

  1. Provide areas of recreation in the natural world
  2. Sustain animal and plant life – that there are the same species here today that were here before the Europeans arrived

Tracts of land are donated to the commission or purchased. He explained the 600-acre Great Haith conservation area and said that efforts were underway to add an additional privately owned acres. Other conservation areas that were explained were the Tilton Property (130 acres), and the Fenderson water protection area. Also the Great Wells Regional Land Trust has permanently preserved lands that give public access to the Merriland River.

Thought for the Week

Tomorrow is the most important thing in life. Comes into us at midnight very clean. It's perfect when it arrives and it puts itself in our hands. It hopes we've learned something from yesterday.
