PETS for 2010-2011
Margaret's report of PETS for 2010-2011:
Rotary theme for 2010-2011 - Building Communities / Bridging Continents
PETS began on Thursday afternoon. That portion was optional but I decided to attend. It was WELL worthwhile. It consisted of three different presentations, one of which was on Public Speaking. The woman who delivered the talk was GREAT. She was entertaining as well as informative and made getting up in front of people and speaking look easy as pie. If she didn't live in Johnson City, TN I'd invite her to speak to us! Suzanne more than likely heard her speak a few years ago.
On Friday there were 3 workshops in the morning and 2 in the afternoon, one of which was a meeting of all the incoming club presidents with next year's District Governor, Ann Lee Hussey. Incidentally, just in case you are ever asked, there are 41 clubs in our district - and I'm pretty sure they were all there. Before dinner that evening there was a cocktail hour hosted by Ann Lee and her husband Mike.
Saturday morning had 2 different workshops as well as a second meeting with the DGE. That stands for District Governor Elect. Rotary is so lot like the military when it comes to abbreviations! There was even a section in the program devoted just to translating all of the alphabet soup. The seminar ended after lunch on Saturday.
There were speakers at each meal, all of which were excellent! Ann Lee spoke at Saturday's breakfast on Polio. It was an unbelievably moving talk and most of the time you could have heard a pin drop.
Networking? Actually, despite the packed schedule and it was packed, there was some time for that. The incoming presidents from Kennebunk, Sanford, York, Ogunquit, Kennebunkport and I are hoping to co-sponsor a Rotaract Club at YCCC. We passed it by John Rainone and he was receptive. Of course we've got a learning curve ahead of us and hopefully it may happen. We're also hoping to have some get-togethers a few times during the year. Not for fund raising but for socializing - known in Rotary as "fellowship."
Also there was a hall of vendors selling more Rotary paraphernalia then you could ever imagine. One of the vendors though was Shelter Box USA. I thought since we sent 2 of these boxes down to Haiti you might like to see what they look like. I took a couple of pictures and picked up a few brochures so I'll pass them around.
My head is spinning to be sure and I'll have to go over all my notes but it truly was worthwhile and hopefully will help make next year a good follow-up to this one.

Thought for the Week
A preoccupation with the future not only prevents us from seeing the present as it is but often prompts us to rearrange the past.
