Last week's Speaker

Peter Mills, Republican Candidate for Governor, Navy Veteran, Business Owner, and State Senator

Ron Collins introduced Peter Mills as an experienced Maine state senator. Peter has served in the state legislature for 15 years. Peter took the podium in a very confident and relaxed manner and told a classic Republican-to-Democrat anecdote. He addressed Maine's high cost of electric power and explained that Maine has to be part of the New England grid to keep the power on, and that grid is expensive, whereas Hydro Quebec's electricity is much cheaper. Peter explained that there is a company engineering floating wind turbines that could produce power cheaper than fixed wind turbines, and that with the wind off Maine's shores being strong and steady, this could be the next step in a partnership to produce wind power. He also spoke of a new method of educational assessment to assess not only students, but also teachers. The cost is $5/child to track the growth of each student and class and teacher, and this method could be applied to effectively measure government, businesses, etc. - it can measure things that couldn't be measured before. The results are instantly available and would provide an accurate way to measure how successfully we are accomplishing our educational goals in Maine. Peter than took questions from the audience.

Thought for the Week

An intellectual is a man who takes more words than necessary to tell more than he knows.
