Last week's Speaker
| Ward Feurt, Refuge Complex Manager, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service |
 |
| |
Ward Feurt spoke about the Rachael Carson Wildlife Refuge that covers 500 acres ranging from Kittery to Cape Elizabeth. After all acquisitions are complete, the refuge will cover 14,634 acres. The refuge was originally named the Coastal Maine National Wildlife Refuge, but was renamed in 1969 after Rachael Carson, the famous author of "Silent Spring," after her death. Its main purpose is to protect the habitat of wildlife. The Youth Conservation Corp, which consists of teenagers from 15 to 18 years of age help in summer months maintain the refuge. The main project coming up is the Houston Manor, a 40' x 32' building which will provide space for the researchers and technicians that work on the refuge. Mr. Feurt spoke about New England's endangered species, the New England cottontail and the Eastern cottontail, which are hard to differentiate. They need dense, low-growth territory, and salt marches and estuaries are critical habitats. He announced that there are 40 million visitors yearly to the National Wildlife Refuge System, and although they are open to the public, wildlife is their main concern. Volunteers not only help with the maintenance, but also serve in reporting violations.
Thought for the Week
When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us.
