Nick Poli passed out a simple test for everyone to do to check for signs of macular degeneration, a disease that causes blindness. Nick was diagnosed with macular degeneration disease in 2005 and had to undergo shots to his eyes - one eye and then the other. After a year the treatments were successful, and his physicians called it miraculous.

Assembly
Russ Grethe, who has helped with the Food Pantry at St. Mary's Church for the past 15 years, accepted a $1,000 donation from the club to the Wells Food Pantry.
Suzanne Ilsley and Eleanor Vadenais reported that the Taste of Wells proceeds will go to the Route 1 beautification project. It will be held at the Coastal House on June 23.
Rt. 1/Rt. 109 Project - It was reported that Terry Hodskins has received the paperwork to apply for the district grant. Also the Wells Chamber of Commerce is interested in purchasing an evergreen tree for the project, so that there will be a live tree to decorate at Christmas time. Dennis Hardy reported that the project wouldn't begin in earnest until the fall, and it was announced that because of the state funds, there will be a landscape architect to help with the beautification plans, including knowing what kind of evergreen tree would be best suited for the park.
Wells Elem. School PTSA, May 23 - Kathy Chase, filling in for John Kreie, explained that if the club volunteered to provide and cook for the event, the club could keep the funds raised.
Donations Requests Granted by Board of Directors:
- $200 - Southern Maine Agency for Aging (Meals on Wheels)
- $500 - Wells Jr. High Odyssey of the Mind (World Competition)
- $105 - Young Maine Readers to sponsor 3 children for 1 year
- $200 - York County Shelter (Helping the Homeless)
- Wells Activity Center requested $16,000. Because we are currently committed to Rt1/Rt109 project, the board did not feel we could contribute funds; however, we will contribute manpower, and readdress the request when the beautification project is complete.
3 new members: Joe Sheehan, Howard "Chip" Hall, Dennis Levasseur were welcomed.
Portland Sea Dog Night - There will be a sign up sheet at next weeks meeting for those interested, and it was decided that members would pay their own way.
District Conference - May 14-16 at Sheraton Portsmouth
3 New Board of Directors for Margaret Chigas' year- Foley, Hansen, Ilsley - were approved by the board.
Auction - Lee Hansen and Margaret Chigas passed out follow-up telephone assignments to the committee members and stressed that we only had enough items for half an auction as of the moment, so get going!!!!! The viewing will be statewide this year.
