Last week's Speaker
Mike Myatt, Vice President of Management and Assisted Living, Avesta Housing, spoke about the services his non-profit, affordable housing organization offers. Project-based housing is based on an applicant's earnings. Tenant-based housing is a voucher system, and there are 12,000 tenant-based units in Maine. They have an annual budget of $27 million and offices throughout the state. Sunnyside and Stephen Eaton are two examples here in Wells. There are 7,000 people currently on the waiting list for assistance. They also have one residential care facility in Gorham where once the residents have exhausted their assets, they are never asked to leave. He mentioned that old school and mill buildings make good apartments, and that old schools in Kennebunk, South Portland, and Portland have been converted. He also said that it was cheaper to put homeless people in permanent housing than it was to put them in temporary shelters. Mike took several questions from the audience.
