Member Spotlight
Eleanor Vadenais lives in Kennebunk and is the Executive Director of the Wells Chamber of Commerce. She has been a Rotarian for 10 years. Eleanor enjoys golfing, and her favorite color is green. Favorite books - "Charlotte's Web" and "Angels & Demons." Pet peeve - "too many to list."
Rotary Minute
Jim Spiller spoke about Rotary's founder, Paul Harris, and how he, with three other businessmen, began to meet in Chicago in 1905. As they decided at the first meeting to meet regularly, they also decided to rotate the meeting from their various office locations, thus the name "Rotary."
50 / 50
Rocky Furman donated his winnings to the Wells Historical Society.
Announcements
Lee Hansen said we were just shy of $20,000 worth of donations for this week's televised auction, which could net a possible $15,000 - $16,000. He asked that everyone call their friends and acquaintances to remind them about the auction. It will be televised in Kennebunk this year. He also reminded everyone not to park by the gates where the returning Time Warner trucks park.
Wheels Around Us - John Kreie still needs a grill and volunteers for Sunday, May 23 at the Harbor Park Barbeque for the Wells PTSA. It will be from 10 a.m. to 2-3 p.m.
Dennis Thayer will take Lee Hansen's place as a greeter at next week's assembly meeting.
Dates to Remember
May 13 - Auction
June 19 - Strawberry Festival
July 31 - Chicken BBQ
Sept 13 - Golf Tournament
Last week's Speaker
Jodi Bissonnette, Director of the York County Food Rescue Program, has been in the food rescue business for 13 years. She explained that food rescue is the practice of safely retrieving food that would otherwise go to waste and distributing it to those in need. Jodi enthusiastically explained the process by which the food is collected, inspected and redistributed to 45 York County food pantries and meal programs from Scarborough to Kittery. Last year 2.2 million pounds of food was provided, 70,887 people were served, and 62,127 soup kitchens were supported. The operation is located at 199 Jagger Mill Road in Sanford, but they are looking for new warehouse space. There is one part-time employee who works 20 hours weekly and 50 volunteers. Both Bob Bohlmann, Maine State Emergency Services, and Russ Grethe, Wells Food Pantry, praised Jodi for her exceptional response in emergencies and to the food pantries in the area.
Thought for the Week
