Interact Students
Eleven Interact students joined us this morning and introduced themselves
Member Spotlight
Isabelle Julien lives in Wells and is the owner/manager of the Mornings in Paris Coffee Shop, 13 Exchange Street, Portland, Maine. Her favorite "sport" is ballet - favorite color is pink. Isabelle first joined Rotary in St. Barts, and she joined Rotary to provide help in the community.
New Member
Chip Hall was inducted into the Wells club and welcomed by everyone.
Wrap-A-Smile
Terry Hodskins warmly received 6 quilts donated by the Thornton Academy Interact Club, who explained that the project was two years in the making. Terry explained that every quilt that goes to the Rotary cleft palet worldwide projects has a Wells Rotary Club label attached. Over 15,000 quilts have been delivered to date. The Wrap-a-Smile idea came to Terry when Bridget Burns, a past Rotarian, returned from a Venezuelan cleft palet mission saying that the children were wrapped in plastic blankets after their surgeries. The next mission was scheduled for 90 surgeries, and 120 quilts were shipped. Terry has received quilts from every state in the U.S., Canada, Great Britain, and Venezuela.
Rotary Minute
Joe Sheehan noted that today was the New York Stock Exchange's birthday. Its origin can be traced back to May 17, 1792, when an agreement was signed by 24 stockbrokers on Wall Street. Individual shareholders became an important part of the Exchange, as individual shareholders are an important part of Rotary. Joe went on to explain that after being away for a year, he came to appreciate how well Rotary does for the community and the world. He ended with an anecdote about a wise man who lived in the woods. Wanting to test the wise man's wisdom, a man approached him with a bird in his hand. He asked the wise man if he knew whether or not the bird in his hand was dead or alive. If the wise man said, "alive," he would crush it. If he said, "dead," he would let it fly away. The wise man's answer was, "the answer is in your hands."
50 / 50
Margaret Chigas donated her winnings to the Rotary polio campaign.

Assembly
Auction - Lee Hansen thanked the club for its almost 100% participation in the auction, which raised $15,000. He said he was concerned about the slow start, but in the last two hours it rallied. He especially wanted to thank the new members who stepped right up to the plate. Lee and Cathy have chaired the auction for the past 12 years. Lee received a huge round of applause for his and Cathy's efforts.
Beautification Project - Dennis Hardy is collecting quotes on a large clock to be donated by the club. He will report next week on the outcome.
Scholarships - The Board of Directors voted to provide 4, $1,500 scholarships to eligible Wells High School students. There was a discussion on whether or not Ogunquit students would be considered, and decided that they would be included.
Theater invitation - Dennis Lavasseur announced that the Wells Cinema was inviting the Chamber and Rotary families to coffee and donuts provided by Congdons at 9 a.m. on June 5 and a movie at 9:30.

Strawberry Festival - June 19. Flyers and posters have been ordered. Interact Club should be invited to participate.
