 Member Spotlight

Dennis Hardy, a stockbroker, lives with his wife, Melodie, at Hardy's Bluff in Wells. They have three children and 2 grandchildren. Dennis likes tennis and his favorite color is blue. Favorite book: "The Count of Monte Cristo," and his pet peeve, taxes. Dennis has been in the Wells club for 16 years and has served in many local organizations, including serving as the President of the Wells Historical Society. He is very glad the club moved their meetings to the Coastal House.

Dennis Hardy asked for RSVP's to his cocktail party this coming Saturday night at his home, and we were reminded that on June 2 Mr. Li of the East restaurant is donating all the proceeds to our club.

    Last week's Speaker

Steve Abbott, Republican candidate for governor, opened his remarks by saying that he grew up in Orono and now lives in Portland. Steve has a 9-year-old girl, Hannah, and a 5-year-old boy, Henry. When the campaign started in January, Henry announced, "he liked it better when Daddy made money." And before the convention Henry's advice was, "just talk about business."

Steve then said that he would change the attitude toward business in Augusta. People do their jobs the way they're being led, and an attitude change from the top would bring change to the legislature. He felt economic change was the most important change along with programs to reduce the size of government. Social programs are started and then forgotten about. They should be reviewed periodically, and if not working, eliminated. An example is the fact that there are three different global warming task forces in Augusta. That's a federal issue, not a state issue, and Augusta needs to keep the eye on the ball and work on things they can affect. He also emphasized the problem of businesses not being able to compete with the welfare system. 109,000 people have been added to the welfare system in the last 5 years. A system has to be developed where people on welfare are trained to do new jobs and are still helped monetarily when they get new jobs until they can go off of the system. He ended by saying that he was optimistic about Maine's future but we had to do better. Steve was asked about the casino question in Maine and stated that as governor, if the people wanted a casino, he wouldn't block it. And as far as the legislature being mainly Democratic, Steve felt with the right leadership the centrist Democrats would work together with him.
