    Last week's Speaker

Laura Dehler the Development Director for Center for Wildlife:

Laura told us that the Center for Wildlife opened its doors in 1986 and has been the only facility in southern Maine dedicated to the rehabilitation of sick, injured and orphaned wild animals.  Over 1,600 animals are brought to the center each year from communities throughout Maine and New Hampshire. Most of the animals are suffering from infection, illness or injury.  The causes and types of injury vary widely; perhaps a great blue heron became entangled in fishing lures, a red-tailed hawk was shot or poisoned or a cottontail was injured by a cat. Whatever the illness or injury, the center provides the full range of diagnostic, treatment and recovery activities needed to maximize each animal's chance of returning to the wild.  Approximately 50% of the animals that are received are released back to the wild.

The Center also provides educational and outreach programs to over 4,000 children and adults throughout the year.

Laura brought with here tree animals that were hit by cars.  A Screech Owl that was missing an eye, because of the missing eye it can not be released back to the wild.  A Spotted Turtle which is endangered.  This came from Pennsylvania and can't be released because it is not know where in Pennsylvania it is from.  The Spotted Turtle has a strong homing instinct and will try to get back to its home.  Then finally a Virginia Opossum was brought out.

    Thought for the Week

I believe there are more instances of the abridgement of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations.

    James Madison
    4th president of US (1751 - 1836)
