    Last week's Speaker

Sally Manninen, Substance Abuse Specialist at the York Hospital, spoke about the importance of drug and alcohol use prevention in the local communities. She helps communities look at children's environment in an effort to discourage abuse. Her work also involves training merchants and restaurant personnel in compliance with the state laws. For instance, they might have someone underage buy liquor and then go to the merchant and help them avoid that situation in the future. Also, schools provide data on substance abuse. She said that there is more tobacco use in Wells than in other surrounding communities. Underage drinking is going down, but marijuana use is increasing, which is a trend throughout the local towns.

Educating merchants, educating families, and educating schools are all very important. Fathers are more influential than mothers as far as drug and alcohol usage is concerned. Leaders in the community are also influential in drug and alcohol abuse prevention. Sally also mentioned that Abuse Specialists throughout the country are concerned that the money from the Tobacco Settlement Act, which is earmarked for prevention, not be dipped into for any other purposes. She then took several questions from club members.
