A Message from the Club President

Greetings from the Rotary Club of Wells, Maine!

Our club was chartered in January, 1986 by several community-minded individuals several of whom are still active. Getting the club off the ground required substantial effort and commitment by those responsible and those hallmarks, effort and commitment, remain as guiding principles of this club to this day.

As can be seen by the above banner, Wells Rotarians are very active in not only promoting our community but building it as well. Wells Harbor Park is a key landmark in this town and we have been instrumental in several projects benefiting that location and the citizens of Wells. The pavilion at Harbor Park was built entirely by Wells Rotarians and has been emulated by other Rotary clubs. Across the way from the pavilion sits the Hope Fenderson Hobbs gazebo the benches for which were recently rehabilitated by our members. Hard by the pavilion is a children’s playscape the funding for which was organized by this club and the Wells Chamber of Commerce. We are currently working with the Wells Recreation Department in the design and construction of another pavilion to be located at the Wells Recreation facility. We provide scholarships for our high school graduates and students of the York County Community College which is located here in town.

Internationally, we are active in our support of surgeons and nurses who donate their time in South America repairing cleft palates (Rotoplast), providing quilts for those youngsters after their surgery (Wrap-A-Smile), contributing toward clean water projects in Central America and providing on-going support for a nationally-acclaimed effort to eradicate the scourge of polio (PolioPlus). Additionally, we have been involved in purchasing an x-ray machine for assistance in the detection of AIDS in a South African community.

We welcome your interest in the Rotary Club of Wells and Rotary International. If you share our commitment to ensuring a better life for those in need in both our community and the world at large and would like to contribute to our efforts by joining us, please call me at the below number. You will be joining a Rotary club that is “Second To None”.

Sincerely,

Jim Spiller, President
